  • LOL. This documentary doesn't get any better when I try watching it again. It's quite oversimplified. 1. Teamed driving--even if drivers are married--is still not easy or indeed even possible after 32 to 48 hours on the road. You cannot get any decent sleep. It doesn't work. Period. 2. Self-driving or completely autonomous driving is never going to be permissible on ANY public roads, highway or city. People will sabotage the auto-driving vehicle and nudge it into the ditch or worse yet, a concrete railing. They simply don't GAF. And that's especially true if they're running late to a work site and some robotic monstrosity is blocking their progress. You know this will happen. You know it. 3. I can see the emergence of some sort of Uber micro-freight logistics. Because OTR trucking is longer a lucrative career. And the accident rates involving long haul trucks are skyrocketing. The long haul truck might get phased out entirely. And replaced by some sort of small van with tandem drive axles. 4. There are no highly refined amenities at truck stops. Far from it. They might have a few snacks and soda drinks. The showers are reportedly g-r-o-s-s. Dental facilities? Please, bro.

Great, every company will be willing to spend $400,000 dollars or more on one of those trucks to make $1000 per week, maybe. That doesn't include break downs, repair costs, insurance, etc. This stuff is a joke. It won't happen for a long time yet, if ever.

  • It's sad when you recognize the various truck stops pictured. Autonomous trucks are still a long ways off. Just look at the airline industry. The planes pretty much fly themselves and have for years and years but they still have 2 pilots behind the controls ready to intervene when needed. Not to mention all the other things drivers do to keep everything working properly. Although driving takes up 90% of our time it's only 10% of what we do. As for Electric trucks it will take quite some time to make that a reality (at least OTR). The infrastructure just isn't there. Unless they create a way to just swap out batteries in roughly the same time it takes to fuel up or charge while we drive it's just not going to happen. Doubt charging while we sleep will ever be feasible either. You'd need to add power to every single parking space which will be a nightmare. Just more things that will get hit and destroyed. Not to mention finding a parking/charging space will be even harder than just finding a parking spot. Most nights I don't even spend at the truck stops/rest areas. Usually on some side road or patch of dirt close to shipper/ reciever just like many others. Will they install charging stations there as well? Yeah I don't think so.... Definatly wouldn't work for a team....

  • A lot of the newer semis get 7-8MPG and the battery on a Tesla semi will be so large that it will eat into the weight allowed to be transported. As for one truck driver leading a convoy that sounds great on the freeway but with the trailer swings on turns and going through traffic lights this would get very tricky. The hardest part of the autonomous truck will be who is liable for the accidents as the carrier would want to blame the manufacturer. Lastly the window conduct company went out of business. Everyone is using APU bows seeing we get a 500lb exemption for it. I’m speaking from someone who has been a driver for 21 years now.

  • There are a lot more expenses to hauling that hypothetical $550 truck from LA to New York. The truck wears out (.24/mile), tires wear out(.03/mi), insurance(.05/mi), unloading the cargo (lumper fees), tolls(.02/mi), state licensing, mechanical inspections, repairs. Refrigerated trailers will still need diesel fuel. States already are imposing per mile fees to replace the fuel excise tax (probably $.07 per mile). So even with a no driver, electric truck, there are about an additional $.40 per mile missing from this estimate, somewhere around $1,000 more

  • Autonomous truck convoys are already here. They are called freight trains. Human driven trucks are enough of inconvience and/or hazard on the road. The dreeam of driverless trucks may be good for trucking company stock value but I don't care about that. I care about open expressways uncluttered by a flock of slow trucks tag teaming passes on a two lane freeway. The companies are worried about hiring new drivers. How about free training and decent wages? Maybe enough time off to know your family. I had a chance to join the Teamsters fifty years ago. I looked at what it would cost over the long run and politely declined.

  • Truckers will become obsolete when driving becomes predictable.. Right up there with roads, construction, weather and life. One must ask themselves, at what point does the truck sacrifice 80,000 of freight to miss the person in the road? or does the truck just run over the person because the laws of physics wont allow to save both?.. and do we really want antonymous software to decide this for us?

  • As a driver I think this video skips over many of the duties of a driver. We are often put in a weird security guard status, ensuring that freight stays safe and untampered between shipper and receiver. Drivers also keep shippers honest because shippers sometimes cheat and load heavier loads than the bills reflect, which could be an issue when they are already loading trucks to their capacity. Weather is a major reason to keep drivers in the trucks, especially if trucks get electrified because the range with bad weather will become an issue and being able to navigate a snowstorm is also a problem for a computer that can't chain the tires or see the road though an Icey windshield
